Welcome to Pueblo of Zuni Fire & EMS.
It is an honor to serve as Fire Chief for a department entrusted with protecting the people, families, property, and traditions of the Pueblo of Zuni.
Our department is guided by three core values: Community, Tradition, and Accountability. These values shape how we serve, how we lead, and how we represent the Pueblo every day.
Our mission is to protect life, property, and the wellbeing of the Pueblo of Zuni by providing professional, reliable fire and emergency medical services with respect for our community, culture, and traditions.
We are committed to building a strong and sustainable department that develops professionals, improves outcomes, and serves the community with integrity. That means investing in our people, strengthening our training, improving our capabilities, and holding ourselves to a high standard of service and accountability.
The strength of Zuni Fire & EMS comes from the men and women who answer the call. Our firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and officers serve with dedication, compassion, and professionalism. Every response is an opportunity to earn the trust our community places in us.

Who we serve
The Pueblo of Zuni
Pueblo of Zuni Fire & EMS provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the Pueblo of Zuni in western New Mexico — the home of the A:shiwi people. We respond from two stations — Station 81 in Blackrock and Station 82 in Zuni Village. Our response area is rural and spread out, at high desert elevation, with long transport distances to definitive care. Those conditions shape everything about how this department trains, staffs, and equips itself.
Accountability
Questions, records & concerns
We take questions about our service seriously, including complaints. If you have a concern about a response, a bill, a crew member, or anything else, contact the Fire Chief directly during business hours. Requests for incident reports, patient care records, and fire investigation reports are handled through the station — bring identification and, for medical records, a signed release.

Pueblo of Zuni Fire & EMS provides free safety presentations, hands-only CPR sessions, Stop the Bleed training, station tours, and home safety visits for schools, chapters, programs, workplaces, and families. There is no cost and no minimum group size.

One department, two disciplines, one standard. Below is what Pueblo of Zuni Fire & EMS responds to and what we provide to the community outside of emergencies.
Working with other agencies
Mutual aid & regional partners
No single department handles every incident alone. Pueblo of Zuni Fire & EMS works alongside tribal, federal, county and state partners — including Zuni Police, BIA, Indian Health Service, neighboring fire districts, air medical providers, and state and federal wildland resources — through mutual aid and automatic aid agreements. When an incident exceeds what one agency can manage, those partners are requested immediately rather than as a last resort.

Careers with the department
Pueblo of Zuni Fire & EMS hires certified firefighter/EMTs. This is a career position on a career department — we do not operate a volunteer or reserve program.
Firefighter / EMT
Our line position, working out of Station 81 in Blackrock and Station 82 in Zuni Village. You respond to structure and wildland fire, medical emergencies and ambulance transport, vehicle crashes and rescue calls — both disciplines, same shift, same crew.

Open positions are posted on our announcements page when they are available. If nothing is posted right now, we still accept applications from certified candidates and will keep yours on file for the next opening. Call the station and ask.
What we require
Minimum qualifications
- Firefighter II certification — current and verifiable
- EMT certification and New Mexico EMS licensure at the EMT level or above
- At least 18 years old, with a high school diploma or GED
- Valid driver's license and an insurable driving record
- Able to pass a background check and a physical ability evaluation
- Willing to work nights, weekends and holidays — emergencies do not keep hours
- Able to take direction, work on a crew, and be trusted with someone's worst day
What we provide
Training & development
- Wildland fire qualification (S-130 / S-190) and annual refreshers
- Continuing medical education and support keeping your licensure current
- CPR, ACLS and PALS
- All personal protective equipment and uniforms, at no cost to you
- Regular company-level training — we train before the call, not during it
- A promotion path that is written down, not decided by who you know

1 — Call the station

2 — Stop by either station
Applications are available at Station 81 in Blackrock and Station 82 in Zuni Village. If a crew is out on a call, leave your name and number and we will call you back.
3 — Send us a message
Use the contact form and choose “Employment.” Have copies of your Firefighter II and EMT certifications ready.

Fire, medical emergency, vehicle crash, smoke or flames, or any situation where someone may be hurt. Call 911 first — do not call the station, and do not post it online. Stay on the line with the dispatcher.

Report a hazard
Blocked hydrant, downed line, abandoned burn pile, unsafe structure, or a road that emergency vehicles cannot get through — call the non-emergency line. If it is an immediate danger, call 911.
